Sketchnote is a MAP of ideas, connectors and shapes. You do not have to be an artist when you start to use Sketchnote because it focuses on IDEAS not ART. We are sure that you can make it even though " you can not draw" as following our simple guidelines below:
Tip number 1: KEEP IT SIMPLE with basic lines and shapes where you find all are connected from small dots. Your IMAGINATION with help you to go faster and easier with Sketchnote. But how can we unlock it successfully ? Well, basically with a piece of paper and any pen, you definitely have a masterpiece in hands by listening to your own style and hobbies. All famous illustrators, they were kids like us in the first day on Earth. Somehow we are trying to call our old days as a creative kid back. We did use this technique but we didn’t know its name during our secondary and high school time. And now we welcome it back as a better version named Sketchnoting.
Tip number 2: KEEP PRACTICE AND HAVE FUN . We believe you can maximizer your own Creativity with Sketchnote like its Father said " get sketching and sketchnoting! Have fun and remember what it was like to draw if you haven't for a while. There's a real joy to be had in putting marks on paper with pencil or pen - you can do it " -Mike Rohde.
To shape an idea, please choose the layout first! There are a lots of layouts out there. It’s really important to understand and pick the suitable one. However it doesn’t mean that you can’t make 1 layout for yourself. Just remember to arrange ideas clearly and logically. For example, we often pick 2 common styles whenever we want to sketch . Storyboard is one of our favorite layouts to retell a story ( Comic style ). Another one is Mindmap for brainstorming new concepts in trainings and teachings.
We realize that most of people feel shy to draw because they never practice more than 3 times. They just felt disappointed and gave up for the first draft already. Thus, don’t compare your work with others, especially in the practicing time. Please believe in yourself from the first start. With “the 3 basics of drawing “ ( dot, line, shape) , we recommend you one of our practical exercises of all time is connecting dots, lines and shapes daily to create living objects or abstract subjects with you own style.
One more step to boost your Sketchnote skill is to spend time on personalizing your own " Visual Library". It’s proven that humans are more confident when they really have weapons in hands. ” Visual Library“ is now your powerful weapon in Sketchnote. Let's draw everything you might feel interested in everyday to this notebook. How about looking around your place and start to sketch them down? :) We hope you can practice this step with colors. You can give those icons a shading with gray or any colors you like.
For your information, there are 4 common types of stick figures : Stick, star, oval and A shape. You can pick one type and create more Emotions on different faces. This practice will help you shape better expression. For example, you can record your real emotions of a day. Maybe it’s a happy day when you accidentally see a rainbow after the rain or extremely surprising face when someone secretly send you a gift.
Last but not least, connectors and information containers are main elements to speak out your Sketchnote the way you want. Don't limit yourself on creating new and unique shapes. Let’s surprise yourself !
